A Unique Geological and Historical Context
The Štiavnica volcano, now known as the Štiavnické vrchy, no longer resembles a typical volcano. Instead, it has transformed into an expansive mountain range, with its highest peak, Sitno, rising to 1,009 meters above sea level. Approximately 15 million years ago, this volcano was the largest in Europe. Today, its southern slopes are home to vineyards that thrive in the mineral-rich soil.
Grapes and Wine Characteristics
The varietals flourishing on the volcanic terrain include:
- Pinot Blanc
- Pinot Gris
- Sauvignon
- Muscat
- Feteasca Regală (locally known as Pesecká Leánka)
Among red varieties, notable options include:
- Blaufränkisch (Frankovka modrá)
- St. Laurent (Svätovavrinecké)
- Pinot Noir
Modern hybrids, such as Devín, Noria, Dunaj, Alibernet, Rimava, and Hron, have also gained popularity.
These wines are renowned for their rich, fruity acidity, which remains vibrant even in highly ripened grapes. Thanks to this characteristic, the wines demonstrate remarkable stability and retain their freshness even after years of aging.
