The Small Carpathian Wine Route Association
About the winery
The Small Carpathian Wine Route Association (Malokarpatská vínna cesta, or MVC) was established in 2007 to support wine tourism, promote the Small Carpathian region in western Slovakia, and assist local winemakers. The route brings together the unique elements of this terroir: authentic local wines, picturesque landscapes, rich Central European history, and traditional gastronomy.
A Historic Winemaking Region Geographically and culturally, the route connects the vine-covered slopes stretching between Slovakia's capital, Bratislava, and the historic city of Trnava. The heart of the region is formed by ancient "free royal towns" Pezinok, Modra, and Svätý Jur. Centuries ago, these towns were granted special privileges by Hungarian kings specifically because of their exceptional wine production. Today, they proudly uphold this centuries-old viticultural tradition, making the region a perfect destination not only for wine lovers but also for enthusiasts of historical architecture and outdoor exploration.
Signature Wine Events The association is widely recognized for organizing highly popular tasting events that attract thousands of visitors from Slovakia and abroad each year.
- Day of Open Cellars (Deň otvorených pivníc): The highlight of the local winemaking year, held every November. Visitors use a "wine passport" and a tasting glass to wander through dozens of historic underground cellars and modern family wineries across the region.
- Open Cellars of St. Urban (Otvorené pivnice na sv. Urbana): A vibrant spring celebration held in May in honor of St. Urban, the patron saint of winemakers, offering visitors a fresh taste of the new vintage.
- Day in the Vineyards (Deň vo vinohradoch): A highly popular September event taking place right before the autumn harvest. Armed with a map, visitors hike directly through the scenic vineyards to meet the winemakers and taste the grapes and wine right where they are grown.
Building Tourism Infrastructure Beyond organizing these flagship events, the MVC Association is dedicated to the long-term development of the region's tourism. It has successfully implemented a network of marked wine trails, installed information boards, and developed essential infrastructure that makes visiting the Small Carpathian area easy and enjoyable for international tourists. Through these ongoing efforts, the association not only puts the region on the map but actively preserves and revitalizes the traditional craft of Slovak winemaking.
