Rača wine association
About the winery
The aim of the association is to preserve, support, and restore the traditions of viticulture and winemaking in Rača, to document and make accessible its history as well as its present, and to save and restore vineyards and wine cellars. In the past, Rača winegrowers were organized in a winegrowers’ association that helped them procure everything necessary for their activities, including professional training. It also assisted them in organizing and selling wine and lent them equipment needed to furnish a wine tavern. In the past, winegrowers usually had a wine tavern in one room of their house, and its operation was typically supported by the whole family. The association set the schedule of opening hours for the wine taverns. Its role also included obtaining permission from the municipal authorities to begin the grape harvest.
Later, in 1939, the German Winegrowers’ Cooperative was established for citizens of German nationality, which built its own facilities for processing and producing wine and also constructed a cultural section with an inn. The entire complex was called the “German Cultural House,” which has been preserved to this day. Since 2011, the German Cultural House has become a cultural center where many cultural events and theatrical performances take place. After nationalization, wine production was taken over by the Wine Industry Enterprises.
At present, Rača winemakers are organized in the Rača Winegrowers’ Association under the leadership of Dušan Žitný. The wine cellars of Rača winemakers are part of the Small Carpathian Wine Route project, within which they open their cellars twice a year to visitors and tourists from the wider area. Since 2016, some of the winemakers have also been involved in a new project called “Rača Open Wine Taverns.” The aim of this project is to make Rača’s wine cellars accessible to visitors and tourists throughout the year, from May to October.
